  • 9 - Why would I choose wood windows?
Wood is beautiful, a great insulator, and a naturally renewable resource. With proper preservatives, wood is durable and corrosion resistant. It is a natural canvas to the designer in you because it allows so many finish options. Many exterior finish types and colors are possible. Exterior finishes include primer – which allows the product to be painted – K-Kron II or aluminum cladding with a polyester or fluoropolymer finish. Several possibilities are available for factory-finishing the interior as well. Or, the interior may finished in the field.

  • 10 - Why would I choose vinyl windows?
Vinyl windows & doors are durable, weather-resistant and low maintenance. They do not need to be finished after installation and never need painting or sealing. The vinyl cannot rot, rust, pit or corrode and is unaffected by moisture, salt air, pollution and airborne chemicals. Learn about Kolbe\'s vinyl windows & doors.

  • 11 - Will vinyl windows melt in the hot sun?
No. Multi-chambered vinyl windows are designed to handle even excessive heat - such as desert climates of the southwest USA, where daytime temperatures can reach 125°F! • 12 - What about vinyl windows in a fire?
Vinyl does not combust like many building materials. It can burn if completely surrounded by flames but, if the flames are removed, vinyl will self-extinguish. Learn about Kolbe\'s vinyl windows & doors.

  • 13 - Why are your vinyl window frames hollow?
The multiple hollow chambers provide a thermal break, rigidity and strength without excessive weight. A solid frame would be heavy, difficult to work with, expensive, and would not perform as well. Learn about Kolbe\'s vinyl windows & doors.

  • 14 - What can I use to clean my vinyl windows?

If you have more stubborn build-up, the following household cleaners work well: Formula 409, Ajax Liquid Cleaner, Murphy\'s Oil Soap, Lysol Cleaner, Soft Scrub, or vinegar and water. The following cleaners or types of cleaners should NOT be used on vinyl; Clorox, Pine Power, Ivory, Grease Relief, Tide Detergent, nail polish remover (acetone).

  • 36 - The aluminum cladding on my windows was damaged by hail. Can the cladding on Kolbe windows be replaced without replacing the entire window?
We recommend that the entire sash be replaced when roll-form aluminum cladding has been damaged by hail. The frame cladding cannot be replaced, however. If the damage is significant enough, the entire unit should be replaced, which requires siding to be removed from around the window or door unit. This would allow the damaged unit to be removed and a new unit installed.

Or, repair cladding like a dent in a car. You will need masking tape, #280 grit sandpaper, a sanding block, quality auto dent filler (Bondo), spray can of auto primer, tack cloth and spray can of matching color paint. Mask off the perimeter of the entire cladding piece which requires repair. Sand off the dented area. Use auto filler to fill in the dent and allow to dry following the instructions on the label. When dry, sand off the area with the sand block to obtain a level surface. Additional coats of dent filler may be required for a smooth surface. After the surface is sanded smooth, spray auto primer paint over filler area and any exposed base metal. Allow to dry and lightly sand entire piece of cladding. Spray two or more coats of matching finish color paint to get proper finish. Matching colors of spray paint for our roll-form aluminum cladding can be obtained from a Kolbe Windows & Doors dealer.

NOTE: Always use CAUTION and protect the surrounding area from overspray.
